Here you will find authentic hatha yoga classes in Marrickville, and private tuition in the Inner West of Sydney.

Urban Grace yoga classes show us how to express the best of ourselves in our 21st century lives of busyness, business, harsh realities and hard pavements. At Urban Grace we make time in our busy lives to open our bodies and remember our heart's desire.  All Open classes are at least 90 minutes so we make time to practice yoga that affirms us as creative human beings so we may flow with grace.  

Hatha Yoga with Urban Grace is the yoga of asana (poses) and pranayama (breath).  It has been inspired by Anusara and Iyengar teaching styles, so we emphasise healthy alignment and respect for every student's individual qualities.  We use our muscles to support our joints and organs and then we stretch, move and expand.  We use our bodies and breath to explore how yoga reveals and expresses our unique gifts.  Therefore you can be young, old, flexible, stiff, talented, vague, athletic, staid - everyone is welcome to practice.



Stand Tall and Shine - 5 Week Course

Tuesdays 6.30-7.45pm
Starts 5th February

Learn the basic yoga poses so you can practice hatha yoga confidently and safely.
Learn how to align those yoga poses so you can enhance your core stability, improve your posture, reduce stiffness and pain.
Enjoy renewed freedom and peace in your body, willing mindfulness and the joys of opening your heart.

 Tuesday Beginners classes run on a 5-week cycle. Most students repeat it at least 3-4 times before moving to Open classes. You can join Tuesday Beginners at any time during the cycle, but the first week is recommended.
The same sequence from the Beginners course is repeated each week in the Level 1 Saturday 9.30am class.
Your $90 pass entitles you to 5 Beginners classes. If you have to miss a Tuesday class you can use your pass to attend the Saturday Level 1 class by prior arrangement.

Cost $90 for 5 classes. Pass must be used within 6 weeks from date of first class. You can buy Beginner passes 5 times.

Week 1 – Support - Feet and Legs
Week 2 – Move - Hips and Lower Back
Week 3 – Create – Neck, Shoulders and Arms
Week 4 – Empower - Core stability and the Spine
Week 5 – Freedom – Breath, Yoga Pose Revision and Mindfulness

Beginners Courses courses are interesting, challenging and fun.
The course is specially designed for beginners who wish to expand their possibilities of health, fitness and personal understanding in a supportive and enjoyable space.
Lapsed yogis are also welcome.
Many people think you have to have a perfect body to practice yoga, or that you have to be flexible. This is not true.
At the Beginners Course you will meet all kinds of people and you will see that none of us are perfect. We all have concerns - such as sore knees, stiff hips, painful lower back, neck and shoulder problems, low self esteem, poor posture, sleep or digestive issues etc etc. However, we do all have unique gifts and you will learn ways to recognise and express these gifts.
You gain freedom in your body and from your problems.
You will learn how to bring peace and contentment into your life.
Mats and equipment are provided.
Wear clothes that you can move around in - shorts, leggings, t-shirts etc, and bare feet.

Open Classes are for everyone who has practiced yoga before. Classes are tailored to the students attending the class and you are encouraged to practice at your own pace.   

Back Care sessions are for anyone wishing to learn techniques to relieve back pain by strengthening and stabilising their core.  Yoga and pilates equipment is used to practice supportive and therapeutic sequences.  Practiced regularly, many students find these classes help them gain freedom in their neck, shoulders, middle back, lower back and hips. You will learn exercises that you can confidently practice at home.  These classes are popular so book early to reserve a space.    

Level 1 classes are for students wishing to practice at a more moderate pace.  Students attending the Level 1 class may be transitioning from Beginners classes, or recovering from injury or illness or they may be older, or stiffer, or they feel like practicing at a gentler pace. Level 1 classes are suitable for beginners who can’t attend Stand Tall and Shine Beginners Course on Tuesday nights by prior arrangement.

Beginners classes are designed especially for beginners and students who have not practiced yoga for a long time.
Stand Tall and Shine is a 5 week course that introduces the basic yoga poses and how to align them for inspiration and health. You can start at any time but the first week of the 5 week cycle is the best time.

Yoga Focus Class is intended for students who practice yoga regularly and wish to progress with dynamic sequences.
Led Practice is for experienced students who want to develop a regular home practice. The teacher practices with the group and calls the poses but does not offer teaching points. Students gain insight and maturity by listening to their own internal instructions and practicing without too much input.

Yoga for Back Care

These courses assist students to relieve back pain.  You will learn yoga poses that help relieve back pain, combined with pilates techniques to strengthen your core and release stiffness patterns.  You will also learn ways to direct your breath so that you can relax deeply and replace pain and stress with calmness.  

Yoga for Back Care classes focus on pilates-style exercises that help you identify your core muscles so you learn how to emphasise strength and alignment.  These are combined with the therapeutic yoga poses that help you learn how to move freely and with confidence so you can get on with your life without the restriction of back pain. Improvements are quicker when students practice at home. 
The next Yoga for Back Care 4 week course starts on Thursday 18th October - 6.30pm - 7.45pm

These classes will include Restorative yoga practice to allow plenty of time for your Back Care exercise to quieten your body.

Cost of the 4 week course is $100
Class size is limited so it is best to book early.

I have been practicing yoga for a long time and I am often reminded of the many ways it brings happiness and encouragement to my life.  I am qualified to teach in Iyengar and Anusara styles and have trained with the best teachers in India, USA and United Kingdom.  

I started Iyengar yoga to help restore movement in my neck after a whiplash injury and yoga practice restored full movement.  15 years into my practice, I started Anusara yoga.  As I was born with a sacralised vertebra that caused progressive instability and degeneration, I was delighted to discover that the alignments taught in Anusara yoga, combined with regular studio pilates practice, enabled me to manage the problem so that I am now virtually pain free.  Learning how to conquer these two physical problems has been invaluable for teaching yoga students how to explore ways of healing.  

I have always been attracted to find ways of inspiring students to align with their own beauty as well as aligning their physical body, and to practice yoga from that place of beauty.   I love to see my students revitalise themselves and restore health, light-heartedness and good will in their busy lives.  

 I emphasize alignment principles that support students to find their core and practice from that foundation.  Physical core?  Spiritual core?  For me as a teacher and practitioner, those kinds of boundaries continue to dissolve as my yoga practice matures.
